“Without passion man is a mere latent force and possibility, like the flint which awaits the shock of the iron before it can give forth its spark.”
— Henri Frederic Amie
I am sure every one of you has at some point of your life been asked- what do you want to become when you grow up? The long list of answers to that touches every sphere of activity that surrounds our life. But the end list of career paths we end up in is alas a small subset of that. Which is why the question arises- Are you following your passion? Many of you I hope will say a resounding yes but majority of you I’m sure will either be ambivalent about it or may even answer in the negative.
Every great personality that we have read about has achieved excellence in their chosen field. They achieved the zenith of success not only because they worked hard but also because they gave it their all for a passion they chose. Why then are we so afraid of following our passion? Why do we hesitate to take the road not taken despite being passionate about it? The answer mostly is either that there isn’t enough money in that job or we are afraid of treading the unknown or the lesser known path. After all who among us doesn’t like wealth and material goods? Who among us can proclaim that a hazy and unknown future doesn’t bother us?
But we will one day reach a point in our lives when our jobs lose their sheen and become plain boring. What do we say to ourselves then? At that stage we will have no other choice but to continue and live a life of regrets. But fortunately for us teenagers and young adults, there still is time to decide. Choose as your major a field you immensely enjoy. If you still are undecided, talk to seniors you look up to, professors and teachers you idolize. You also have the option of choosing a minor or electives as you gradually find your footing. Also believe me when I say that your parents will get over it if you choose not to follow their dreams. After all passion is the trigger of happiness and success and no one else in this world wants you to succeed as much as your parents.
You deserve to live your life to the fullest. You deserve to be at the top. You deserve to be the best. All you need to do for this is to give yourself the gift of passion. As cliché as this sounds- follow your dreams and let not even sky be the limit.
